Document Summary

The developmental perspective: developmental pathways, the life course of all humans follows a path/trajectory that may be littered with risk factors, note, not all criminal behaviour originates in childhood. The ultimate goal is to make an optimal set of decisions that will minimize cumulative risk: major theme underlying classical risk assessment. Risk factors are empirical and statistical associates of the outcome of interest. The larger the number of risk factors displayed by an individual, the greater the likelihood that the outcome will occur. Not theoretical or mechanistic models because it"s (cid:374)ot which risk factors. Risk factors contribute, but how many: empirically identified psychosocial risk factors. The accumulation of risk factor in the absence of sufficient protective factors results in negative behavioural, emotional, and cognitive outcomes. Protective factors can mitigate or eliminate negative influence of risk factors. Emphasizes the interaction among factors and their effect on outcome over the course of development. Strong connection to persistent, violent offending victims and offenders.
