PSYC39H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Julian Rotter, Differential Association, B. F. Skinner
Document Summary
3 types of learning: classical conditioning, instrumental learning, social learning (link w criminal beh, mere exposure hypothesis. If ppl are exposed to something, they tend to favor it (familiarity) Operant conditioning (ppl think theres a link to criminal beh) Pavlovian (cid:523)ppl don"t think theres a link to criminal beh(cid:524) Doesn"t have to have any reinforcement involved. As noted, watson (cid:498)mis-defined(cid:499) behaviour leading to the circularity intrinsic to much of psychological theorizing and conceptual severance from neurobiology and physical science. John b. watson"s 1913 publication of psychology as the behaviorist views it. This precluded neurobiology at the time, because process-relevant neurobiological processes could not be observed for technological reasons. Data must be comparable and replicable: b. f. skinner. Acknowledged presence of mental activity but believed it was irrelevant. Huh: basically, what skinner was studying was not simply (cid:498)learning(cid:499) but (cid:498)learning + motivation(cid:499) In other words, not simply new memory formation, but memories for outcome contingencies. (see later slide: skinnerian concepts.
