PSYC33H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Cerebral Palsy, Intracranial Aneurysm, Hydrocephalus
Document Summary
An abi occurs after birth and is not related to: a congenital disorder or developmental disability, e. g. , cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, autism, spina bifida with hydrocephalus, or, a process that gradually damages the brain, e. g. , dementia, multiple sclerosis, Sabaz, et al. , (2014) study of 507 severe traumatic brain injury clients living in community settings: overall prevalence 54% Inappropriate social behaviour 33: aggression 32% Lack of initiation -23: multiple challenging behaviours 35% Examples of challenging behaviours: anger/ aggression/poor frustration tolerance. No behaviour occurs in isolation, there is always a relationship with the environment by understanding this relationship you can predict future behaviour: consistency is key to managing behaviour, paying attention to good behaviour increases it. Ignoring good behaviour extinguishes it: paying attention to unwanted behaviour increases it. Ignoring unwanted behaviour decreases it but may cause an extinction burst. Prevention relaxation techniques: breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, mindfulness, visualization.
