Most of the content written is my own notes! I didn"t rewrite the slides for the most part. Lecture started with prof showing the photos in the first 10 slides and just seeing how we reacted to them. The first use of the word emotion" was in 1570s in france. The word had an active and dynamic connotation to it. In ancient china, there were believed to be 7 emotions. The emotions were all mostly skewed to be negative with happiness being the only positive emotion. It wasn"t deemed appropriate to display emotion through facial expressions, however, they used posture to symbolize emotions. Animals were given facial expressions in art but humans were not. Ancient egypt thought the brain served no purpose, but hippocrates said the brain was actually important. He put brain into the spotlight by saying emotions come from the brain.
