Document Summary
P s y c 1 2 l e c t u r e 9. Sexism: biased based on sex; ageism: biased based on age. Ambivalent and hostile sexism: sexism that doesn"t look like sexism, might look nice (chivalry) b/ u/dneath it there are sexist attitudes. Not bias directed at old people, bias directed based on age (can include young people - juvenile ageism); in our society we infantalize teens. Certain laws: 16 to drive, 19 to drink rules belittle the decision-making capabilities of younger people (possible ageism); att"s and opinions not taken seriously b/c of young age. Elderly (65+) - good marker but it"s an old idea: as pub. Hc has improved people are living longer (not uncommon to live to 100) *avg. age is high 70"s for men and slightly higher f/ w. Might need to be revised; mand. retirement is gone in on b/c people are living longer.
