Document Summary

Nervous system is divided into two major parts: central nervous system (cns) & peripheral nervous system. Central nervous system is made up of brain & spinal cord. Peripheral nervous system is made up of all the other nerves; nerves that go out of the brain & spinal cord. Human brain all you see is cerebral cortex & cerebellum. Human brain is identical to cat, rat & dog (mammals) in terms of overall organization. After spinal cord is divided into fore-brain, mid-brain & hind-brain (general terms) Keeps you alive at most basic level: not a place for you to have a stroke or tumour. Mid brain: reticular formation, an area composed of a number of different nuclei, primary factors in mid brain. Involved in sleep-wakefulness cycles, circadian rhythms, wakes up & puts us back to sleep. Damage in reticular formation = do not wake up = a coma (very critical)
