Document Summary
4 abilities for language: categorize, label categories, sequences behaviors, mimic necessary for babies to develop onset of language. Categorization: designation of certain qualities to specific concepts, ex. being able to define the difference between plant category & animal category, makes it easier to perceive & retrieve information. Lh helps order vocalization & hand movements that are used in language. Infants: prefer to listen to speech, can make sounds used in all languages, mirror neurons in the frontal cortex help children mimic sounds they hear, when infants are listening their brains are getting activated. Infants who are adopted are able to speak & sound as if they are native to their place of adoption (even though they stereotypically look like they would speak with an accent, etc. ) Loss of sensory input (breakdown in sensation not language) Motor paralysis or incoordination (this is a low level motor impairment)
