PSYB65H3 Lecture : lecture notes 10 - brain damage(2)
Document Summary
(cid:0)prefrontal area - anterior portion of frontal lobe regarded as related to intelligence historically ("bigger head means smarter") Training them first, then remove their prefrontal area. Monkeys lost delayed response capabilities (can"t perform if there is a delay b etween problem phase and solving phase) -> appear to lost short-term memory. If leave the monkeys in the dark or give barbiturate, they can solve delay prob lems seems to be there is more emotionality rather than pure memory problem. Also found that animals without prefrontal area have problems on alternation. Patient whose prefronal area removed was totally out of control. 20 patients were all survived from losing prefrontal area (further: 7 had recov ered, 7 had improved) Freeman & watts cut through anterior portion of brain-- 18% developed seizures within 10 years behavioural outcomes of prefronal area damage-- Trouble in changing behavioural strategies when the original one is inappropria tely (problem of alternation)
