PSYB65H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Dementia, Encephalitis, Multiple Sclerosis
Document Summary
Blockage of vascular supply/blood flow: diff kinds of blockages. Cerebral vascular accident (cva): also used to refer to a stroke, severe interruption of blood supply to brain. When this happens, results in ischemia (brain not receiving enough oxygen and glucose---infarct) can happen fast(almost always) or slowly. Encephomalacia blood supply loss is very slow, brain tissue softens/deteriorates, caused by slow blockages, associated with elderly (cause of some dementia) Thrombosis locally formed blockage, blood clots, when you get old people have problems with blood becoming thicker, more likely to form clots (sedentary) Encephalitis some sort of infection of the brain: viral infections polio, rabies, herpes, bacterial (most common: meningitis) xi. Fungal infection extremely rare, in advanced cases of untreated aids xii. Parasitic infections rare in developed countries, malaria, amoebic. Gliul (helper cells) outnumber neurons, 10 for every neuron. Myelin sheath wraps around axon, to make process faster(oligodendrocyte cell) Disease of the cells destroys glial cells myeline.
