Document Summary

Barbiturates work through gaba transmitter system: gaba is the primary inhibitory amino acid neurotransmitter. Barbiturates work by binding to gaba receptors in the brain. Synergistic with: other sedatives and hypnotics, anxiolytic drugs. Drugs that take away anxiety / calms people down: anti-convulsants. Whenever we try to stop seizures, we are trying to stop excitability of the brain. What does synergistic mean: if you put them together, they are additive (or multiplies) E. g. take a barbiturate and take 1 beer equivalent of taking 3 beers. Consequence / side effect: reduced amounts of rem sleep. Withdrawal: strong depressants withdrawal = seizures. Depends on period of time you"ve been taking it. Never take someone directly off depressants unless you are substituting it. Produced by yeast digesting sugar alcohol by product. Negative problems of alcohol: most devastating drug to society, largest admissions to mental hospitals.
