PSYB57H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Bound And Unbound Morphemes, Function Word, Arbitrariness
Document Summary
Language is an extraordinary complex discipline of study. There are 4 things that are true about every language: Displacement: i can talk about something, even when it is not physically present. Arbitrariness: this is referring to the idea of random. It is referring to the link between the sounds of a language and what that sounds mean. As long as we in a language agree that those collection of sounds mean this idea, then we are fine. It is referring to the idea that we have a cash of words in our knowledge bank and we can produce an infinite number of sentences. I can put an idea out there in lots of different ways. Learnability: we are equipped to learn any language when we are born. A baby learns the language that they are exposed to adequately. We have flexible or plastic mechanisms of our mind to learn that language. we are almost predisposed to do it.
