Sensation: the ability to detect the pressure, and to turn that detection into a private experience. Perception: the act of giving meaning/purpose to those detected sensations. Tienne bonnot de condillac (1715-1780): to imagine the mental life of a statue with no senses, and he concluded that the statue would have no mental life. Condillac imagined, a real mental life would develop. There are ways in which sensory receptors and nerves undergird your perceptual experience: neuroimaging: an image of the mind, eg. binocular rivalry to view completely different images with each of your two eyes. Gustav fechner became absorbed with the relationship between mind and matter. Dualism: the idea that the mind has an existence separate from the material world of the body. Materialism: the idea that the only thing that exists is the matter and that all things, including the mind and consciousness, are the results of interaction between bits of matter.
