Psyb51 lec08: models of attention: entry vs. late selection. Multi-level filtering -- a pipeline of processing that opens and closes certain parts depending on. Even semantic processes can remain unattended/ unconscious fu(cid:374)(cid:272)tio(cid:374) (cid:894)e(cid:374)tr(cid:455) (cid:448)s late sele(cid:272)tio(cid:374)(cid:895): to de(cid:272)ide (cid:449)hat is pro(cid:272)essed a(cid:374)d (cid:449)hat is(cid:374)(cid:859)t. Attention can split into more than one focus; not necessarily coherent region in space. One can attend to some objects while ignoring some, and ignoring and fixating on others. Eg. fmri experiments and multiple object tracking: biased-competition model of attention (desimone & duncan - 1995) Competition: stimuli in the visual field compete for limited processing capacity and control of behavior. Bias: competition biased towards certain stimuli depending on: Instructions, spatial cues, feature cues fmri proof for biased competition: 250ms, images are presented sequentially and simultaneously. In simultaneous condition, more competition and less response. Attention and eye movements are closely coupled.
