PSYB45H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Stop Sign, Stimulus Control, Slot Machine
Document Summary
Intermittent is where a response is reinforced sometimes. Schedule tells us when a reinforcement is given. Have different impacts on the rate of behaviours and speed of extinction. Intermittent reinforcement has slow learning and slow extinction. Advantages of intermittent: maintain behaviour such as raising hands in classroom for example. Stays longer because satiation takes longer, slow extinction, work more consistently, and also behaviour persists and easily transfers to natural environment. Free-operant procedure: individual is free to respond as they wish, no constraints on how and when they can respond. Discrete-trial procedures: individual"s responses are limited to rate of stimuli presented for example in class if they are presented with one problem at a time then they can only answer one at a time. Or take out garbage 4 times to get reward then can only do it once a week on garbage day for four weeks to get reward, can"t do it every day.
