A few key aspects of human language: these four principles are true for every language. They govern the construction of language more generally: language can convey displacement. Example: you can talk about something in its absence and people will still know what you are talking about. We use language to refer to things that are not immediately present in our environment: arbitrariness is the link or relationship between sounds and the meaning they have when they construct a word. For example: in english the word money means financial currency, but in spanish the word in dinero. This allows us to construct ideas flexibly if a given culture or a given language agrees that this is a reasonable thing to do. Show the subculture of california agreed that hella means a lot.
