We focused a lot on reinforcement and increasing operant behaviours. But what about basic principles for decreasing operant behaviours: different possible principles and practices. Extinction is first basic approach we will discuss. When a behaviour that was previously reinforced is no longer followed by reinforcement, the individual is less likely to engage in the behaviour again. Stopping the reinforcement of a behaviour will cause the behaviour to decrease in frequency: basic principle of extinction, when you want the behaviour to decrease remove the reinforcement. Similarities with respondent extinction, but important to distinguish the two: respondent extinction: decrease in a conditioned response due to a cs no longer being followed by a us. Cs goes back to being an ns: whe(cid:374) (cid:449)e just sa(cid:455) (cid:862)e(cid:454)ti(cid:374)(cid:272)tio(cid:374)(cid:863), (cid:449)e are referring to operant extinction.
