Anxiety: unpleasant feeling of fear and apprehension, stress, worry, inability to relax, and fear of worst happening. Out of proportion to the danger actually posed. Specific phobia: unwarranted fears caused by the presence or anticipation of a specific object or situation. Social phobia: persistent, irrational fear linked to the presence of other people. Example: systematic desensitization of social phobia: homeopathic treatment, systematic desensitization, flooding. Sudden, inexplicable attack of symptoms: laboured breathing, heart palpitations, nausea, chest pain, feelings of choking and smothering, dizziness, sweating, trembling, feelings of impending doom. Chronic, uncontrollable worry about all manner of things. Obsessions: intrusive and recurring thoughts, images, and impulses. Compulsions: repetitive behaviour or mental act that the person feels driven to perform to reduce the distress caused by obsessions. Avoidance of stimuli associated with the event or numbing of responsiveness. Stressor causes significant impairment in social or occupational functioning for less than one month.
