Document Summary
Chapter 5: research methods in the study of abnormal behaviour. Science: pursuit of systematized knowledge through observation: comprised of a method (how to get & evaluate the info) & a goal (development of a theory to explain info, must be replicable repeatedly. The research methods of abnormal psychology: case study: collecting historical/biographical info on a single individual, e. g. 1. 00 (highest is +/- 1, a perfect relationship: if the sign of r is +, variables are positively related. As x increases, so does y: if the sign of r is -, variables are negatively related. Basic features: experimental hypothesis, independent variable: factor under the experimenter"s control, random assignment, dependent variable. Confounds: aspects that make results difficult to interpret, like third-variables or effects mixed with the independent variable (e. g. time) Internal validity: effect can be confidently attributed to the manipulation of the independent variable. External validity: extent to which results can be generalized beyond the immediate study.
