Statistical infrequency: digit span test (cid:523)how many numbers you"ll remember(cid:524) typically 6-7. Use working memory, frontal lobes: normal curve (bell curve w/most in the middle) Limitations for those that are above average not lower. Violate norms: culture determines what is normal, abnormal in one time period not abnormal in another (eg. homosexuality) time effects. Causes distress: not all disorders have distress with it (anti-social personality disorder, symptoms can cause distress and maybe disability. Disability: distress not same as disablility, stop you from doing something. Depressed when mom dies: these feelings/symptoms must be irrational. No clear cut way to diagnose all this (cid:523)it"s murky(cid:524) No one definition of abnormality that captures all of it: always exceptions. No two patients are exactly the same.
