Why study child development: understand adult behaviour, help children by: Minimizing harms: helps guide policy; i. e. , policies around around child abuse or child neglect, help caregivers, teachers, community workers etc, researching child development help all these factors. As and area of study & research, what is child development? (s-4: sub-area of developmental psychology. Looks at diff. types of changes; moral development etc: cognitive, emotional, motor, social capacities & behaviours, processes that underlie these changes & how and why they occur, 2 processes, maturation: natural changes over time, learning. Issues in developmental research: getting a representative sample. => marginalized groups: getting data directly from children. When requiring samples you may nd children at a shelter who suits the requirements of a well diverse sample however they may not be at that same shelter the next day. Communication not always easy; innovative methods must often be used.
