Week #2 lecture #2: understanding the self and others. What we are depends on who we interact with and depends on the situation we"re in. Individual self: beliefs about our unique personal traits, abilities, preferences, tastes, talents, and so forth. Relational self: are beliefs about our identities in specific relationships. Relationship as a son/daughter, close friends, romantic partner. Collective self: are beliefs about our identities as members of social groups to which we belong. Siblings may take on different roles in the family to minimize conflicts. Role for birth order (first born, etc. ) Younger siblings are more agreeable but challenging the status quo. Older siblings are often more responsible and supportive of the status quo, younger siblings are often more rebellious and open to new experiences. B/c usually older sib inherit the properties, so they like to keep things they way they are, however this is not the case for younger sib.
