Emotions motivate behaviour: they motivate behaviour to achieve goals. Physiological e ects that help the organism achieve goals. Components of emotions: physiological state, psychological state ( appraisals which means assessment we make about the world, facial expression (sometimes) How objects and events in our environment are evaluated relative to our current goals. If we perceive there to be a threat, we will respond even if there is no threat. Di erent appraisals cause you to experience di erent emotions, even if you are experiencing the exact same situation as someone else. Initial, quick appraisal made of an event or circumstance as being positive or negative. E. g. you look over and see tarantula on someone, you will appraise it as bad for you happens immediately, doesn"t need a lot of thinking. E. g. if you see cute kittens, you will appraise it to be good unless you hate cats: secondary appraisal stage.
