PSYB10H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Kin Selection, Ultimatum Game, Pluralistic Ignorance
Document Summary
Aggression: any behavior aimed at causing either physical or psychological pain: hostile aggression: aggression in which causing pain or harm is the only goal. Instrumental aggression: aggression in which the pain or harm caused is a means to some other goal. E. g. , robbing a bank, winning a sport, self-defense. There can be overlap between these two forms of aggression: situational determinants of aggression. Higher temperatures are related to higher rates of aggression. More violent crimes occur in summer months. More acts of violence occur in cities that have higher average temperature. One study found that baseball pitchers are more likely to hit batters with the ball, as the weather gets hotter. Feelings of discomfort caused by the heat may be misattributed to other people. Evidence that media violence can increase aggressive behaviors. Longitudinal study found that boys with high preference for violent tv at age 8 were more likely to engage in criminal behavior by age 30.
