Interfered with men"s ability to work, contribute to society, and get out of poverty. Available treatment infusions of toxic metals; when it worked it had serious, fatal side effects. 1932 us public health service and tuskegee institute began study of 600 black men. 400 of them already infected w/ syphilis ; 200 of them were not. Researchers wanted to study effects of untreated syphilis on the men"s health over a long term. At the time not treating the men was alright b/c risky treatments that were available at the time were unlikely to work anyway. Men were not informed that they had syphilis.
