Document Summary

Features of a true experiment: independent variable (iv) is manipulated, dependent variable (dv) is measured, random assignment to conditions. E. g. watching violent tv (iv) can cause acting violently (dv) If we were to conduct in an experiment, you must manipulate the iv. The first way to manipulate the iv is through viewing an episode of a violent tv show. This type of way to manipulate is through experimental condition. The second way to manipulate the iv is through viewing the same episode of a violent tv show in which the violent scenes have been edited. This type of way to manipulate is through control (or comparison) Condition: after the iv is manipulated, the researcher assesses whether there is a difference between conditions in some outcome variable, which is the dv. The dv is left alone to vary naturally. This allows one to infer causality from the manipulated iv to the measured.
