Document Summary
We often feel as though the choices we make in life are rationale. The result of mental calculations related to the costs and benefits of performing certain actions. The notion that we make choices by maximizing benefits and minimizing costs is called. Everything we do, we do as a result of cost-benefit analysis. This notion has strong ties to ethics, religion, and law. That is, we believe that some choices are wrong and punish those who make them. What if someone says, "this is how i was raised", "violence is all i know" Although we may sometimes (occasionally?) make choices in this way, most of the psychological evidence suggests our choices are often far less rational than we might like to think. The problem is, true full-out rational thought is hard (especially when probabilities are involved!) It involves the consideration of many factors and how they might interact to determine the impact of certain choices.
