Document Summary
Psya02h3 lecture 12: the self and the role of context. Sociological perspective we cannot form a sense of self or personal identity without intense social contact with others. The self represents the sum total of perceptions and feelings that an individual has of being a distinct, unique person a sense of who and what one is. Personality fits into this because you believe things about yourself. Our personality changes when we are with other people. Self-identity the perception of what kind of person we actually are. We recognize ourselves as an autonomous individual: we have our own minds; thoughts, ideas, own knowledge. ~ the mirror test tests self awareness. Put a mark on a child"s face (rouge lipstick), and put them in front of a mirror. In the animal world we are able to tell if a species are conscious: only the smartest animals pass, such as dolphin and some monkeys, etc.
