Learning objectives: characterize human perception in utero, define and list some examples of teratogens and how they affect prenatal development, describe how a typical neonate (newborn) spends her day. Fetal experience and sensation: the womb is not a vacuum, fetuses experience stimuli in utero. Fetal vision: what is there to see, not much, very little light penetrates the mammalian uterus. In bilingual mothers, the baby will prefer both languages as opposed to a third, unfamiliar language: babies are more psychologically aroused by familiar sounds (or speech as opposed to music). - different than others: compared to other teratogens, high-ses, educated women are more affected by alcohol ingestion in pregnancy. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder: the most severe complication of alcohol during pregnancy is fetal alcohol spectrum. Disorder (fasd): facial deformities, intellectual disability, attention disability, behaviour disorders, used to be called fetal alcohol disorder, but was changed because it varies between affected individuals, just like autism.
