Document Summary

There is another critical step between encoding information , and that information being robustly stored in working memory: a step called consolidation. When specific bits of information are encountered across repeated (and different) episodes, the information becomes detached from the episodes and just becomes something we know semantic memory. It is easier to accurately retrieve some specific bit of information when the retrieval context (internal or external) is as similar as possible to the context in which the information was learned.
