PSYA01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Luigi Galvani, Tabula Rasa, Psychologies
Document Summary
In the mid-1800s, psychology was born: difference b/w philosophy and science. If people are considered spiritual, everything else in the world is material and spiritual does not have to follow natural laws (spiritual overrides natural laws). Animals are clever machines (animals are just biology: cartesian dualism: rene believed that humans were dualistic creatures. He believed that like animals, we have a part of us that is material/mechanic but we as humans also have a soul that can control the machine (rene thought humans were hydraulic machines) Means we are still responsible for our actions (this made the church and state happy) Before this theory, it was thought that people were completely spiritual (crack in the door in philosophy to make people think we"re machines) John locke he took rene"s theory further: locke believed that people were completely machines (mind is a machine) James mill coined the term for john locke"s theory materialism: no soul; people behave w/ natural laws.
