PSYA01H3 Lecture 23: Lecture 23 notes
Document Summary
Working memory is what we use to solve problems like the camel example. One of the challenges of working memory is to get things into ltm. When you want to retrieve things from your memory it is good to have hooks (things to prompt your memory) Bizarre imagery -> coming up with odd or weird images to help you remember things more easily (e. g. oranges in the bed example) Encoding -> process of transforming sensory and perceptual information into memory traces. Retrieval -> the process of accessing memorized information in order to make use of it in the present moment. Storage -> time and manner in which information is retained between encoding and retrieval. Deep encoding/processing -> generally related to an item s meaning or its function. > deeper is often better because it sticks with you more. Shallow encoding/processing -> involves more superficial properties of a stimulus such as the sound or spelling of the work.
