Everyone naturally has a right to property, to acquire property in a way consistent with the law of nature: problem: conflicts in nature are inevitable. Consent is the only device to create a political society and the government for such a society. Only this one of agreeing together mutually to enter one community and make one body politic. Consent is essential to forming a political society that can be governed properly without consent, there can be no civil government or political society. You are giving up the power and jurisdiction (certain rights) that you naturally have under the law of nature when you are entering this political society, but you are not giving up. Locke gives a very specific answer; we do it for the preservation of their property (124). Observe that, in the lockean theory individuals are required to give up only power and jurisdiction which are deposited into one common authority that acts as a judge.
