Third world : term came about during the 50"s used by asian/african countries to refer to themselves. Group of 77 said they have collective interests different from others: today, still called the group of 77, but have 131 members. Focus on: poverty, healthcare, civil conflict, trade & investment. Common history: subject to european domination/colonial control. Nature of their economies: agriculture, minerals, dependent on imports of machinery/technology from industrialized nations. Common challenges: social high levels of poverty, lack of education/healthcare. Solution was to attempt to industrialize: political, economic many differences in economic growth in global south countries. Poster children" of successful globalization; but lots of inequality. Sub-saharan africa has benefited far less from globalization.
