Instance exercise: regression of human rights, lack of democracy. Common interest (realists care about relative gains) Self-interested/rational: igos, what is their context, anarchy, interdependence. Economic trade: how do they interact? less of a problem, liberalists see both happening. Not concern about annulation or equal to threat. Not all states are power-seeking, may seek for wealth (often) mutual gain to be found. Not the only important thing: competition, conflict is possible form of government matters, going to be aggressive states, cooperation interdependence, mutual gains to be had. Common interests make security dilemma: type of government matters, democracy is different from dictatorship. Security dilemma determines what goes on: dictatorships interacting with democracy, how states will act internationally. Democratic peace thesis: collective security, removing the security dilemma. Classical liberal idea comes from the ideas that progresses possible. Means by which we can get out of it. Is nato a collective security organization: no, alliances are not considered as collective security, bosnia, stop serbia.
