PHLB20H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Cultural Relativism, Factual Relativism
Document Summary
Protagoras"s relativist theory of truth: protagoras"s theory is more broad than just making a claim about yourself and/or preference. He says what seems to anyone actually is for the person to whom it seems . If what seems to me is 2 + 2 = 5 this is true for me, and you say no 2 + 2 = 4 then that is true for you. Socrates says the problem here is that there is no perspective from which to criticize. An example, if no one believed his theory then it would turn out that his theory wasn"t true. According to protagoras"s own theory, if no one believes it is true then it"s not true. So the truth of relativism depends on someone thinking" it is true: socrates complaints about protagoras"s theory of relativism is in conjunction with the argument, relativism is self-refuting . This means his theory will be disputed by everyone, beginning with protagoras himself.
