There are necessary conditions in order to apply to principle of double effect: the action taken must be good or, at least, morally indifferent (permissible, the intention must be morally good. In order for a consequence to count as merely foreseen it cannot be intended as a means to the good consequence. The doctrine of double effect is not the end always justifies the means : a good end does not justify the use of immoral means. Example: pushing the person in front of the run-away train to save five from being run over, hastening death in order to relieve pain from life.
