Document Summary

We want a tolerable and ideal balance between these two things. Purpose: tests medical treatment, determines safety effectiveness. Tests medical intervention in humans: determines safety/effectiveness. We want to test both the safety and the efficacy of treatments. For example: a treatment has been shown to be successful in some individuals but it is also highly risky as well. Some portion of the participants will be given the treatment: placebo control group: not given the drug, placebo effect, given a sham treatment with no medical efficacy. Contrasting the effects of the old treatment vs proposed new treatment(s) Blinding: ignorance about treatment (placebo, new, old) Subjects receiving the treatment are ignorant about what the treatment is: whether it is a real treatment or a placebo or whether the treatment is a proven treatment or a new treatment, double blinding: goes both ways.
