Document Summary

Week 5 lecture #10: wednesday february 1, 2017. Jaworska euthanasia and respecting the margins of agency. If these challenges are successful, then dworkin"s arguments in defense of prioritizing a person"s pre-dementia interests over her post-dementia interests will not stand, as it is. Dworkin puts forth two main arguments to justify adhering to the wishes the patient expressed before becoming demented. As he sees it, this course of action both promotes the patient"s well- being and is required in order to respect the patient"s autonomy. In each argument, while i consider most of the ideas well-founded, i challenge the crucial premise. They still possess their ongoing critical interests as established pre-dementia. Their lives can still go better or worse depending on whether these ongoing critical interests are satisfied or unsatisfied, respectively. This analysis stands or falls with the assumption that demented patients no longer originate critical interests. Critical interests and sense of a whole life.
