PHLB02H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Eating Animals, Cora Diamond, Lightning
Document Summary
Singer, is flawed, although she ultimately agrees with singer"s overall position that eating meat is wrong. She therefore argues that eating meat is wrong in a much different way that singer does, and that is the basis of her paper. "animals cannot speak, like humans. : etc, however, there are, in fact, humans that are unable to think rationally due to cognitive impairments, learning disabilities, etc. No: we still treat them as equally human -- we do not slaughter them for food, therefore, our speciesism blinds us; we aren"t slaughtering and eating animals due to their lack of reason or their inability to speak. If this was truly why we were killing animals for food, then we would treat humans devoid of reason or the ability to speak in the same way that we treat animals -- but we don"t. Similarly, cows dying a natural death would be out of anyone"s control. We can either eat it or let it rot.
