PHLA10H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Blaise Pascal, Natural Evil, Omnipotence
Document Summary
Phla10 assignment 5: prudential and evidential reasoning, are two kinds of reasons that a person may have for believing a proposition or situation. Prudential reasoning is when something is believed, because doing so is in your best interest. An example of prudential reasoning could be if you are told to believe something, and are offered a reward or compensation for doing so. The reward and compensation are in your best interest, so you are then motivated to believe the proposition. Evidential reasoning is when a reason is brought about by evidence, as opposed to theory. An example would be if you were told something very unusual, such as your principal having purple hair. The probability of you landing a 5, or 6 is 2/6, which is 34%: blaise pascal proposed an argument revolving around the existence of god, called pascal"s wager. he proposed that if someone exists, then god exists.
