Document Summary

Exercise 9: briefly outline the main structure of descartes"s dualism. Dualism is the view that mind and matter are different things. Materialism is the view that mind is a part of the material world which is all there is: briefly outline the main structure of the mind-brain identity theory. The mind-brain identity theory makes a claim about objects and also about the properties those objects possess. First, it says that your mind and your brain are one and the same object. Sometimes it is said that mind is the rational part of the soul; but this seems to forget many conscious mental states (feeling, emotions, and sensations). Arguments like these use a very important philosophical principle: leibniz"s law. One of the basic elements of our common metaphysics": explain what is wrong (according to sober) with the first cartesian argument for dualism. Arguments for dualism is based on the immortality of the soul is a valid use of leibniz"s law.
