Brain cells: the prototypical neuron, cortical cytoarchitecture, glia cells. The cortex is also divided into four major lobes: frontal lobes. Anterior to the precentral gyrus: primary sensory area. 3 major sensory / motor / association areas of cortex. Divided the cortex into 52 cytoarchitectonic areas where each was assigned a number according to the order in which he prepared his slides. Primary motor cortex: lies in the precentral gyrus, controls movement of the contralateral (opposite) side of the body. Primary sensory cortex: lies in the postcentral gyrus, involved in sensation from contralateral (opposite) side of body. Association areas (cortex: makes up bulk of cerebral cortex, considered seat of human cognition, involved in higher order processing for separate sensory / motor modalities. Sensory and motor pathways are topographically organized according to their level of sensitivity and control, respectively: aka motor and sensory homunculus, association corticies. Usually located adjacent to primary motor and sensory areas.
