Not involved in working or procedural memory. In alzheimer"s disease, this brain area is one of the first to show damage (memory) High seizure susceptibility: lowest seizure threshold. Vulnerable to effects of ischemia and hypoxia: periods of oxygen deprivation. 5 location and organization of hippocampus and dentate gyrus. Hippocampal formation includes: dentate gyrus, hippocampus proper, subiculum, presubiculum, parasubiculum, entorhinal cortex. Neuronal cell bodies and zones of connectivity are arranged in orderly fashion. Dentate gyrus has three layers: molecular layer. Granular cells of dentate gyrus contain monopolar neurons with dendrites from top or apical portion. The axons (called mossy fibers) extend into the polymorphic cell layer / hilus.
