Document Summary
In greek: hippo means horse, kampos means sea monster, reflects the sea horse like structure of hippocampus (hc) Large role in learning and memory: specifically, being able to encode new information to make long (declarative) memories. Not involved in working or procedural memory. In alzheimer"s disease, this brain area is one of the first to show damage (memory) High seizure susceptibility: lowest seizure threshold. Vulnerable to effects of ischemia and hypoxia: periods of oxygen deprivation. 5 location and organization of hippocampus and dentate gyrus. Hippocampal formation includes: dentate gyrus, hippocampus proper, subiculum, presubiculum, parasubiculum, entorhinal cortex. Neuronal cell bodies and zones of connectivity are arranged in orderly fashion. Dentate gyrus has three layers: molecular layer. Granular cells of dentate gyrus contain monopolar neurons with dendrites from top or apical portion. The axons (called mossy fibers) extend into the polymorphic cell layer / hilus.
