Document Summary
Pragmatism is an approach that assesses the truth in terms of success by using methods of effect, outcome, and practicality. Pragmatism was a theory founded by an american philosopher. Many pragmatists argue that believing/not believing in abstract truths has no relevance to one"s life. William james was a psychologist and philosopher focused on pragmatism. He argues that our lives contain habits which can be good or bad. New experiences can change existing habits or simply create new ones. John dewey"s nature of education theories are ties to his philosophies in pragmatism. He believed that communication and social interactions are critical junctions where habits and thoughts lie. Meliorism is the theory that with human effort the world can be made a better place. Richard rorty spent a lot of time defending pragmatism as a clear philosophy. His approach to pragmatism is best known as ironism or a promise to see the world through unforeseeable historical descriptions.
