Why did people begin to write in the fertile crescent: people were once nomadic. We moved looking for food: once humans ceased to live in hunter-gatherer groups, we began to rely more and more on agriculture for survival, advances in farming allowed people to stay put, cities began to be built. In the sumer region, the first major city to emerge was called uruk". The city was protected by a 20-foot-high wall, six miles long: uruk was an administrative capital for the sumer region, not a political" capital as we think of today. Bulla pouch (to hold tokens: what the sumerians developed was a small pouch, known as a bulla, labeled it how many tokens were inside. Numeric tokens: they have different numbers of notches on them, so they are worth different amounts.
