Somatically a way of learning things through direct sensory perception of our environment: first-hand, unmediated experience, this type of knowing only make up a small percentage of the total things we know. Symbolically things we know through someone or something (i. e. , parent, friend, teacher, museum, textbook, etc. : mediated meaning it came to us via a medium. Medium middle or that which comes between two things i. e. , television and discovery channel come between us and the animals in the wild. When we stop to think about all the things we know, we suddenly realize that the vast majority of what we know is mediated: mass media accounts for much of what we know (and not know) today. Before mass media, the primary medium for conveying information / ideas was via spoken or written word: information via spoken or written word had limitations with transportation.
