Sociolinguistics: study of relationships between language and society, social factors - age, gender, social class, ethnicity, race, etc. (affect language use) Social class (context, word choice): how long they have been living in a certain place (immigrated to a place , personality / attitude pauses (confidence level, where would you see variation with the adjectives. Sociolinguistic only look at language in use (what they actually say); performance: performance competence in use (what comes out of the mouth) Linguistic competence; abstract; knowledge in head of native speakers: performance . Record people even pauses count, gender, social class, etc. Don(cid:495)t always need recording, can collect data. Different sources of data: interview, surveys, questionnaires, online surveys. Watching movies: good for comparing or else date needs to be recent, scripted not real language. Can use round tables, political debates, youtube, cooking competitions, blogs, personal letters, diaries. Different levels of formality: standard english (education, media, etc. )
