Constituent: a group of words can form a constituent if they function together as a syntactic unit. 4 syntactic tests: are used for finding constituents: replacement: a group of words can be replaced with a single word. Verb phrase (vp): consists of a verb and a noun phrase as well as an adverb that modifies the verb, for example, fido often barks, fido kissed my cat intensely. Prepositional phrase (pp): contains a preposition (the head), followed by an np or by another pp. Adjective phrase (adjp): consists of an adjective and an adverb, followed by a pp, for example, i am very proud of my student, some adjectives don"t take a complement, for example, this course is intensive. Adverb phrase (advp): contains an adverb as the head and an optional preceding adverb, for example, very quickly. There are 2 ways to represent the internal structure of phrases: using bracketed diagrams, using syntactic trees.
