LINA01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Coarticulation, Vocal Tract, Epenthesis
Document Summary
Goals: have a common way to talk about speech sounds, understand why some sounds exist and others don"t, understand why particular rules occur (in phonology, be able to describe the speech sounds. Sound classes: speech sounds have two major categories, consonants and vowels. Consonants: produced with either a complete closure/narrowing of the vocal tract, some kind of air flow obstruction, consonants can be described by three articulatory features, voicing, place of articulation, and manner of articulation. Voicing: voicing is the difference between sounds (vibration) e. g. [z] and [s, the vibration happens at the vocal folds, which are in the larynx, glottis is the opening between the vocal chords. In a voiceless sound, the vocal chords are open, pulled apart and no vibration is produced: when the vocal chords are closed, they are vibrating, and a voiced sound is produced. Manner of articulation: manner is how the obstruction of air occurs.
