(what is the causal equation/relationship between natural resource abundance and political resources) but what causes this relationship (is this direct or indirect, and are there intersecting variables?) a state in which a large amount of revenue accrued from the sale of natural resources goes directly to the state, causing the state to tax its people, weakening the rights of citizens to demand accountability from rulers. And this money is used to buy the loyalty (compliance) of the citizens, creates rent-seeking dependency (where bodies become dependent on the state) The resource curse, state-breakdown and the emergence of civil wars p there is a strong statistical correlation between depence on natural resource exports and civil war p particularly strong with respect to successionist ecivil wars.
